100 AD: Jewish Talmud is the first to describe abnormal bleeding in the form of death from circumcision

900 AD: Abu Khasim, an Arabian physician describes male relatives who died from uncontrolled bleeding after trauma.

1803: John Conrad Otto is the first to RECOGNIZE that a hemorrhagic bleeding disorder primarily affected men, and ran in certain families.

1901: US Surgeon General’s catalogue listed lime, inhaled oxygen, and the use of thyroid gland, bone marrow, hydrogen peroxide, or gelatin, as treatments for hemophilia.

1904: Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna of the Russian Romanov Dynasty give birth to Alexei Nikolaevich, diagnosed with Hemophilia.

1965: Dr. Judith Graham Pool publishes a paper on cryoprecipitate. She discovered that the precipitate left from thawing plasma was rich in factor VIII.

1969: The first summer camps open up for boys with Hemophilia.

1970: Freeze dried powdered concentrates become available containing factor VIII and IX. Allows patients to “self infuse” factor products for the first time.

Jan. 1982: The CDC, having recently experienced major reorganization and severe budgetary and staff reductions, begins an investigation on the presence of AIDS within the Hemophilia community.

Dec. 1982: The CDC confirms a 20 month old with hemophilia contracted HIV after multiple blood donations.

82-85: BAYER, BAXTER, ALPHA THERAPEUTIC, AND INSTITUT MERIEUX CONTINUE TO DISTRIBUTE plasma PRODUCTS KNOWN TO BE INFECTED BY HIV.

Oct. 1984: A new method, lyophilized, heated factor products no longer show any sign of the HIV virus. The method is approved for use by the National Hemophilia Foundation despite fierce opposition.

1985: Bayer continues to distribute untreated blood products with high risk of HIV to Latin American and Asian markets after it is pulled from the US.

Between 1981 and 1984…
70-90% of Hemophiliacs became infected by HIV.
The majority would die from AIDS.
